- 4 large egg whites
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Red and green gel food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°F (90°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Ensure your mixing bowl and whisk are grease-free.
- In a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar.
- Slowly add the granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, increasing speed to high until stiff glossy peaks form and the sugar dissolves.
- Beat in vanilla extract. Divide meringue into separate bowls if coloring. Gently fold in gel food coloring.
- Fill piping bags fitted with star tips and pipe small swirls onto prepared sheets.
- Bake for 1 hour. Then turn off oven and let meringues cool inside for 1 more hour.
