Description

This creamy cheddar cheese sauce is perfect for mac and cheese, nachos, or as a dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 Tablespoons gluten free flour (or AP flour if not GF)
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1 cup milk (2% milk fat or higher recommended)
  • 11/2 cups freshly shredded cheddar cheese (not pre-grated)

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add flour then whisk for one minute.
  3. Slowly whisk in milk to create a smooth sauce then season with salt and pepper and stir to combine.
  4. Cook while stirring slowly yet constantly until milk has thickened, about 4-5 minutes, adjusting the heat so that the milk never boils.
  5. Turn off the heat then sprinkle in the cheese.
  6. Stir until the sauce is melted and smooth, then taste and add additional salt and pepper if necessary.
  7. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, avoid pre-grated cheese as it often contains anti-caking agents.
  • This sauce can be used in various dishes, not just mac and cheese.
  • Adjust seasoning to your preference.
